VIKINGS’ JOHNSONS GETTING PLENTY OF ACTION— 10/13/2005
By Kevin O’Neill
The Minnesota Vikings’ Johnsons are receiving their share of action. NT Spencer Johnson has 9 tackles, while rookie guard Marcus Johnson has started all 4 games. Veteran QB Brad Johnson is the Johnson receiving the least action, as the backup has appeared in 3 games without throwing a pass. The Vikings are among 8 teams that have 3 or more players named Johnson on their team. The Bengals have 6 Johnsons, the Cowboys have 4, and the Niners, Cardinals, Bears, Lions, and Falcons join the Vikings with 3 apiece. Overall, there are 44 guys in the NFL named Johnson, including three Eric Johnsons (Cardinals linebacker, Niners tight end, Bengals defensive tackle.) In a related story, Rams linebacker Pisa Tinisamoa is the only player in the league with the first name Pisa or the last name Tinisamoa.

Remember when the Vikings simply led the league in DUI’s? Well things got a lot more interesting there this week with their Vikes Gone Wild boating escapade. Can’t they just have a booze cruise and then get a room? We were unable to confirm rumors that Apollonia, Vanity, and Sheila E were on board the boat that ever so briefly cruised the purifying waters of Lake Minnetonka.

Growth in the online poker sector is slowing considerably and it is being felt in the stock values of a couple of industry players. Unlike sports betting, which can be “bet and go” the time commitment that people have to make in playing online poker must be an issue. That being said, dedicated players tell me there are still a lot of easy pickings out there. The window has been missed if you were hoping to attend a day game in Green Bay this season. Green Bay have five remaining home games and all kick off at 3:15PM Central Time or later. With all five taking place after Daylight Saving Time ends, the entirety of every remaining Packer game will be played under the lights.

Dallas Cowboys possession receiver Keyshawn Johnson has got to be the most immature, highest maintenance 34-year old, 10-year vet in NFL history. How about the job that Rick Neuheisel stepped into as Ravens QB coach, having Kyle Boller and Anthony Wright to work with. Just so you don't think Wright actually had a good game last week, 160 of his 230 passing yards came after the Lions went up 28-10. Football teams often improve or decline rapidly during the season, and often that change is based on the quality of opposition they play. Following their first three games against Florida International, Marshall, and North Texas, Kansas State was averaging 36 points per game, 470 yards of offense, and nearly 5.5 yards per rush. But conference play has reared it’s ugly head and in games against Oklahoma and Kansas the Wildcats have averaged less than 17 points per game, 240 yards of offense and less than 1 yard per rushing attempt. Let’s see if the installation of redshirt freshman Allan Evridge, a big time recruit, helps KSU, or if the game has passed by 106-year old KSU coach Bill Snyder. LSU’s defense is on the upswing. After looking very vulnerable allowing 560 yards and 31 points at Arizona State, the Bengal Tigers are picking up on the schemes of their new defensive coordinator, itinerant defensive savant Bo Pelini. In their last three games LSU has allowed 320 yards against Tennessee, 229 at Mississippi State, and 138 yards in their win at Vanderbilt last Saturday.

With the resurgence of LSU’s defense, and their letdown off the disappointing MTSU loss, we’re willing to forgive Vanderbilt for the loss, especially since LSU only led by 12-6 into the 4th quarter. Georgia comes to Nashville this Saturday and while Georgia’s win at Tennessee was impressive, it was fueled by costly Volunteer turnovers. But this second straight trip to Tennessee is far from a high point on the UGA schedule and clearly qualifies as a letdown spot for the Bulldogs. The Commodores will play with great emotion in an effort to keep their season on track. Look for Vandy to hang around with the superior Bulldogs and stay within this high handicap.

With turnovers and the self-immolated of their defense on Sunday, the Ravens gave up 35 points to the Lions despite Detroit gaining only 266 yards of offense. Look for a big performance out of the Raven D this week. The Browns have a better offense than expected (a decent 5.8 yards per play) but should struggle both passing and throwing the ball. The Ravens don’t have enough punch to take advantage of the Browns defensive deficiencies and Romeo Crennel is a solid game planner against a one-dimensional Ravens O, and even that dimension isn’t working as Baltimore gains a mere 91 rushing yards per game on 3.3 yards per attempt. Look for the under to work in Baltimore.
